Ricki Lake vs AMA
The AMA (American Medical Association) wants to have it out with Ricki Lake over the subject of childbirth! Ricki recently produced a film called the Business of Being born, which looks unfavorably towards hospitals.
More pics after the hop…
Ricki wasn’t by any means bashing hospitals, however. TMZ says the film is about midwife aided home delivery…which is safe right? That’s how babies were born for thousands of years before the AMA! Ricki’s film discusses how it has become a business and a huge income for all babies to be born in hospitals…and she is right. Home births can be safe too.
Do you think the AMA is right to diss her? Is she being responsible when she suggests a mid-wife birth at home is an option for mothers?

Ricki did the American public a huge service in making the Business of Being Born. The AMA is just feeling the heat of an informed public. We are the only country in the world where the majority of births are handled by surgeons. There are some definite problems with birth in America. We need to expand the options in this country, not limit them like the AMA would have us do. I’m sure it has much more to do with money, control and ego.

I agree with Ricki. Women should be given the information about their options so they can make an informed choice. Women survived giving birth many years ago without the aid of doctors and medication to induce labour. What happened to human right?
