Michael Phelps wins Sportsman of the year. Surprise. Really Big surprise. The award is handed out by Sports Illustrated every year and honors an athlete who has reached a significant achievement during the year. And they thought Michael’s horde of gold medals qualifies.
More news after the gold…
I kid! Michael did have a great fete this year! He beat Mark Spitz’s record – thank God, that cocky thing needed to go down a peg – and won 8 gold medals in Beijing. Sports Illustrated said this of Michael:
If Phelps’s dedication is a given in the long run-up to the 2012 Games, there is still some uncertainty about what events he will swim in London. Just as Tiger Woods has won the Masters with three different golf swings, Phelps feels compelled to tinker just to make sure he remains fully engaged. He and Bowman are in agreement that he will drop one race from his Beijing program — the 400 IM, even though Phelps set the world record. He will continue swimming the 200 freestyle and will add a new event, the 100 free.
How many medals can this kid win? He’s unstoppable!
