A Slumdog Millionaire child actor was put up for sale by her father. Her own father! The actress is Rubina, the girl who was flown in for the Oscars this spring and photographed as the angelic . She was truly a child of the slums pulled in to the fame of the movie, unfortunately not the fortune of it.

The fame was hard on the child actors and their families after the success of the movie. One of the boy actors was beaten publicly by his father too. He claimed they were not paid. Rubina’s father claims they have received nothing for the movie either, and the sale was only for Rubina’s best interests. From News of the World:
In a bid to escape India’s real-life slums, Rafiq Qureshi put angel-faced darling of the Oscars Rubina up for adoption, demanding millions of rupees worth £200,000.
As he offered the shocking deal to the News of the World’s undercover fake sheik this week, Rafiq declared: “I have to consider what’s best for me, my family and Rubina’s future.”
Rafiq tried to blame Hollywood bosses for forcing him to put his daughter up for SALE.
As he tried to fix the illegal adoption deal, real-life slum dweller Rafiq declared: “We’ve got nothing out of this film.”
The producer of the movie, I believe, announced he was giving a million dollars to “fix” some of the problems of the slum children in India, but never made mention of the children who were in the movie. Very interesting twists to this story. Do you think the children should be paid a lot more money or simply brought to the US for opportunities to get out of poverty? I think their families couldn’t handle a richer lifestyle in India, but maybe they could.
