Mischa Barton’s drug use is what pushed Nicole Richie away. Mischa and Nicole had been very good friends, before Nicole got away from her party girl image. Once Nicole got pregnant and matured, she stepped away from Mischa.

Nicole used to be a real party girl, especially when her and Paris Hilton were shooting their reality show. Nicole was a huge trouble maker. According to Hollyscoop:
Nicole and Mischa used to be really close friends, but after Nicole started a family with Joel Madden, she stopped associating with Mischa because she didn’t want to be around “negative, unsafe behavior.”
“In the last few years, her dark side has really come out,” says the source, who is close to both Richie and Barton. “Her friends, like Nicole, want to be supportive but they really can’t be around her too much. She’s too volatile.”
Mischa’s got a sad tale to tell, it seems. Someone needs to help her get on the right path or else her story is going to have a sad ending. Somebody, get Mischa real help!
