DJ AM was upset over his recent break-up with Hayley Wood. DJ AM and the model Hayley Wood broke up last week and friends say he was “devastated.” She called it off and he didn’t want things to end. He was also reportedly still dealing with the post traumatic stress of narrowly avoiding death in a plan crash just last year.

While DJ AM was an avid drug user in his past, the 36-year-old had been clean for 9 years. The fact he was using again (a crack pipe was found near his dead body) was a shock to close friends.

“I can’t believe the drug stories. AM didn’t even touch alcohol. He wasn’t a party guy. It’s hard to believe,” DJ Scotty Boy told PEOPLE. “The [2008] plane accident made AM very humble. He cared more about life and his friends. It was hard enough when we heard about the accident and now to hear this, it hasn’t really hit yet. It’s kind of unbelievable.”

Aside from Hayley Wood, DJ AM dated Mandy Moore in 2008 and Nicole Ritchie in 2005-2006.
