Michael Phelps, who got into an accident earlier this week, admitted to drinking a beer before getting behind the wheel. Police also found that he was driving with an invalid license. Poor Michael Phelps — kicks butt in the water but just can’t catch a break out of it.

Phelps, who very famously was caught on camera taking bong hits, can rest easy that cops have decided the traffic accident wasn’t his fault. However, he should probably get a valid driver’s license. He’ll have to appear in court explaining why he has an expired Michigan liscense but resides in Maryland.

According to The New York Daily News, Phelps was not given any special treatment at the crime scene:

“We had our very best eyes on the situation, and we’re very well aware of his history and his notoriety,” he said. “We wanted to make sure that everything was done completely by the book.”
