What did Tiger Woods have to say during his press conference? I have to say I’m impressed, Tiger talked more about his marriage than I thought he would, his rehab, he apologized. Let me give you a break down of what Tiger said in his 15-minute conference which just happened.
Tiger’s conference details after the jump…
First of all his wife Elin Nordegren wasn’t there. His mom was. Basically he apologized to his family, friends, people who work with him and his fans.
Tiger started off saying that most of the people at the conference were his friends, people who work with him and know him and have been critical of him for a good reason.
Tiger said he’s deeply sorry for his selfish behavior. Then he quoted his wife Elin, when he said sorry to her, she said it’s not your words, it’s your behavior over time. And he believes what is happening between him and his wife is a matter between them, husband and wife.
Tiger said he’s let down his friends and his fans. He has disappointed them.
He said he knows people are questioning who he is and how he could have done the things he did.
Tiger said for all he’s done he’s so sorry.
There’s one issue he really wanted to address is that Elin his wife has never hurt him. She didn’t hurt him on Thanksgiving night and there has never been any domestic violence in their marriage. Tiger said Elin deserves praise not blame. And what he’s done was not acceptable.
As to why he did what he did? I knew it!
Tiger said he was convinced that normal rules didn’t apply to him, he was living above the rules.
He brought shame on himself, his mother, his wife, his kids and his wife’s family. He goes to mention that all the kids all around the world who admired him. Parents used to pinpoint to him that he’s the role model to their kids. (He was for my little girl too)
Tiger said it’s not what you achieve in life that matters, it’s what you overcome.
He’s deeply sorry for what he’s done. He admitted that he was in rehab from the end of December till early February. He said he still has a long way to go.
He said he understands the press is interested in knowing whether he and his wife Elin will remain together. He said that would be a matter between Elin and him.
He blamed the media for wrong accusations of him taking performance enhancing drug which he has never done.
Tiger also blamed the media for following his family. He said he brought this on himself but his family has not done any wrong and the press should leave his wife and his young kids alone.
Tiger’s focus now is to become a better person, a better man especially for those close to him. He said he was brought up basing his faith and belief on Buddhism but has drifted away from it.
Tiger said he’ll continue to receive help and tomorrow he’s going off to receive more treatment.
He said he does plan to return to golf one day but he doesn’t know when. He does not rule out it’ll be this year. He looks forward to seeing his fellow players on the course.
And this last bit made me have teary eyes. Tiger asked all of us to have room in our heart to one day believe in him again.
What do we make out of it?
Tiger has sinned and he is deeply remorseful (won’t you be?) I don’t think for a moment he ever thought he’d be busted. Too powerful, too successful and too rich perhaps. He was at a position where there are tons of temptations and he didn’t really knew how to avoid them or in his words, he thought he deserved them. He forgot the core value and morality our society teaches us. ( In plain language, he didn’t know how to be a good family man)
Tiger is not John Edwards, he’s a private citizen afterall and yes, what he’s done is hurtful for his wife, family and disappointed his fans and friends and it’s now up to him to make up for it. Indeed sometimes it’s too late to make up for all the damages one has caused.
Whether Elin should take him back. That’s entirely up to her, it’s a lot to digest and I don’t think it’s a question she can answer right now. I am shocked she’s been dealing with the whole enchilada with such sanity.
