John Mayer quit Twitter and has an explanation for why he’s off the social networking site. His reason? John Mayer is a true artist, not a marketing scheme, and thinks only wannabe socialite artist-types post about themselves on Twitter.

more John Mayer after the hop…

While he admits to being a guilty faux-artist in the past, John Mayer‘s love affair with tweeting and status updating is over. For now. He said:

“It occurred to me that since the invocation of Twitter, nobody who has participated in it has created any lasting art. And yes! Yours truly is included in that roundup as well. No artwork created by someone with a healthy grasp of social media thus far has proven to be anything other than disposable. I’m not knocking Twitter for those who are trying to make a name for themselves. Some people need all the RTs they can get today,” he sniped. “But for those who have already established themselves it’s a slow erosion of the artistic notion.”

He continues to say he’s readying himself for a new album and it might take a while because “good art” takes a very long time.

See ya, John Mayer!
