Carey Mulligan beat out a slew of A-list actresses to play Daisy Buchanan in an upcoming Great Gatsby remake. News hit the web that Leonardo DiCaprio was tapped to play Jay Gatsby in the Baz Luhrmann-directed movie, but the jury was still out on who would play his famous love interest.
Among the possible candidates – Blake Lively, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johannson and Kiera Knightley – Carey Mulligan came out tops, with Luhrmann announcing the news today.
“I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world’s most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting. However, specific to this particular production of The Great Gatsby, I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: “Hello, Daisy Buchanan.”
I actually like this news. What a breath of fresh air! Mulligan is most definitely the least Hollywood of the bunch and not as classically bombshell as the rest. Way to go Baz!
