Host Ricky Gervais gave a semi-controversial speech at the Golden Globes last night and hilariously made fun of Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, Charlie Sheen and Hugh Hefner. Gervais made quips about Cruise and John Travolta‘s sexuality and how nobody saw Jolie and Depp‘s crap-sterpiece, ‘The Tourist.’
While you could hear a few rumbles of laughter in the audience, word on the street is that he seriously pissed off the head of the Hollywood Press Association and because of this won’t be invited back. As Popeater‘s Rob Shuter reports:
“Ricky will not be invited back to host the show next year, for sure,” a member of the HFPA tells me, adding that Gervais’ relentlessly mean shtick could have even larger consequences. “For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated. He humiliated the organization last night and went too far with several celebrities whose representatives have already called to complain.”
What did you think of the opening monologue. Personally I found it hilarious! Not what you’re used to seeing on stage at an awards show, but c’mon, he didn’t say anything that everybody isn’t already thinking.

What a crazy bastard.
I think it wasn’t meant in a malevolent context. Gervais has a very specific style of humor and delivery and if the HFPA wasn’t expecting that, then they shouldn’t have asked him to present in the first place. Having your agent call to complain the day after is really just confirming the gossip rumors his jokes were based on have standing in fact. If it’s not true or ridiculous, then you can laugh at it, if it strikes a nerve, there’s probably a reason. Learn to laugh at yourselves!
