Esperanza Spalding took home Best New Artist of The Year beating Justin Bieber and Drake! It was the biggest shocker of the night.
Who is Esperanza? Besides being a very talented jazz artist and bassist, she’s the girl who left Justin Bieber empty-handed tonight as most of us would have expected Biebs to win this award.
Esperanza is 26 born and raised in Portland, Oregan. Spalding is of African-American, Welsh, Spanish and Native American descent.
At five, she had already taught herself to play the violin and was playing with the Chamber Music Society of Oregon. No doubt she’s very talented but for those who aren’t jazz followers, you might not have heard of Spalding.
Now that you have, do you still think one of these household icons namely Biebs or Drake should have nabbed the prize instead?
