VANESSA MINNILLO’s mother reveals that she didn’t even know that her daughter was getting married—so obviously, she wasn’t invited. Sad, isn’t it?
Vanessa recently married Nick Lachey, her boyfriend of four years, in a beautiful, intimate ceremony on Necker Island. Most of their closest friends and family were there, but one person was noticeably absent—the mother of the bride.
Vanessa’s estranged mom, Helen Bondoc, hasn’t seen her daughter in over two decades. She was also not invited to her daughter’s wedding. In an interview with Star magazine, Helen reveals:
“I didn’t have a clue that Vanessa was getting married. We last spoke about 12 years ago, on the phone. I just wanted to talk to her and tell her everything straight about my life. But I still think about her all the time, and I still love her dearly.”
Upon seeing pictures from Nick and Vanessa’s St. Barts honeymoon, Helen gushes:
“Oh my goodness, she’s beautiful! She’s changed so much, though I can still see that little scar on her forehead from where she picked at her chicken pox when she was a child.”
Vanessa’s parents met in the 1970s at the Clark Air Base in the Philippines, Helen’s home country. After Vanessa was born, the couple moved to L.A. and soon divorced. Helen remarried, and right after the second marriage fell apart, she left Vanessa with her father, Vincent Minnillo, and then never came back to see them again. Vincent recalls:
“[Helen] said, ‘Keep them for now… But she never came back.”
Vanessa has been estranged from her mom ever since, and she admits that she feels “sad, confused and emotional” about the fact that her mom abandoned her. However, the former Miss Teen USA refuses to talk about why they have never tried to mend their relationship.
Helen, meanwhile, is open to a reconciliation. She says:
“It would be nice to have a relationship with her now, but I don’t know how she’d feel if I called her.”
And if ever Nick and Vanessa have kids, Helen says:
“It would be a happy occasion to meet my grandchildren. Whatever she’s doing today, I hope she’s happy with this man and that he treats her well. She’s still my little girl.”
If you were in Vanessa’s place, would you have done what she did? Or would you have given your mom another chance and invited her to your wedding?
