According to celebrity news, DEMI LOVATO was recently spotted carrying a pack of cigarettes in her purse as she was leaving the Marmalade Café in Sherman Oaks, L.A. It begs the question: is Demi a smoker?

Tsk tsk. You are a role model for young girls, Demi.

After overcoming an eating disorder, cutting and self-harm compulsions, depression and various other emotional issues, Demi has become a shining role model for teens who struggle with the same problems. She has given others out there the hope that recovery is possible, and that all it takes is bravery and the willingness to get better.

With that in mind, it’s disappointing to find out that Demi is a smoker (why else would she carry around a pack of cigarettes?). We know she’s an adult and she’s free to do what she wants, but a lot of young people—especially those who are going through the same issues she’s gone through—look up to her. Demi serves as an inspiration to them, which is why it’s not a good idea for her to be seen with a bad vice.

Some of you may think that it’s not such a big deal, but smoking is an addiction, and that’s not something a role model should be seen doing—particularly a role model for teens who battle eating disorders (those can be considered an addiction too) and self-harm compulsions.

Of course, the “Skyscraper” singer didn’t ask to be a role model, but she is aware that a lot of young people look up to her, as she recently admitted that she was proud of being a source of inspiration to others. Demi said:

“Kids used to tell me, ‘You’re my role model.’ And I’d want to shake them and be like, ‘Whyyyyyy?’ [But now] I finally feel like I can inspire people. I can be proud of it.”

Ironically, Demi actually starred in an anti-smoking PSA four years ago, when she was 15 years old… so it’s kind of hypocritical of her to be smoking, isn’t it?

What do you think? Does Demi have a responsibility as a role model?
