It looks like MADONNA won’t be the “Material Girl” any longer if she loses a lawsuit she’s facing for allegedly stealing the brand name for the clothing line she and her 14-year-old daughter, Lourdes Leon launched last year.
Clothing company L.A. Triumph claim they’ve been selling their junior clothing line called “Material Girl” for the last 14 years (hey, it’s as old as Lourdes), and Madonna‘s MG Icon Company has infringed on their trademark by naming her clothing line after them.
Wait a minute. Doesn’t Madonna hold the rights to the name “Material Girl?” The song was a raging commercial success and landed in the top two in Billboard 100 when “Like A Virgin” came out in 1984. She holds seniority by a whole 13 years.
But Madonna‘s attempt to have the lawsuit thrown out of court for lack of grounds was dismissed by the judge. So the Material Girl and her clothing line will be facing trial in mid-October and Madonna may be ordered to pay unspecified damages to L.A. Triumph if she loses the case.
Poor Madge. She isn’t having such a good week at all. “W.E.,” the film she wrote and directed was panned at the Venice Film Festival, and now this. Maybe she should stick to what she knows best and go on another tour.
