ANDY WHITFIELD, the hunky Welsh action star of the Starz TV series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” has succumbed to cancer. He was 39.

Entertainment news today reported that the actor and model was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in March last year, and immediately began treatment in New Zealand. Due to his illness, filming for Season 2 of  “Spartacus” was delayed, and the network produced a six-part prequel “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena” instead.

While Whitfield was declared cancer-free two months after treatment, his remission was short-lived and the cancer returned with a vengeance. Whitfield died in Australia a few hours ago in his wife’s arms, just 18 months after he was diagnosed with the fatal blood disease. Starz then recast Whitfield’s role in Spartacus with Australian actor Liam McIntyre.

Before he became a model and actor, Andy Whitfield worked as an engineer in Lidcombe, Australia. His television credits include “Packed to The Rafters,” and “McLeod’s Daughters,” and he also starred in “Gabriel” and “The Clinic” on the big screen.

Rest in peace, Spartacus…
