Zachary, who garnered praise from critics for his work on the off-Broadway play “Angels in America” (a play set during the early days of the AIDS epidemic in America), told the magazine:

“[It was] the most challenging thing I’ve ever done as an actor and the most rewarding… And at the same time, as a gay man, it made me feel like there’s still so much work to be done, and there’s still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed.”

Though he has played numerous gay roles before and is very active in causes for the gay community, Zachary has never revealed his sexual orientation… until now. The actor has joined the ranks of other openly gay celebrities in Hollywood, such as Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen DeGeneres, Amber Heard, and more.

In his interview, Zachary also touched on the fact that some gay teens are still being driven to suicide due to bullying, despite the fact that gay marriage has been legalized in more and more states. He said:

“As a gay man I look at that and say there’s a hopelessness that surrounds it, but as a human being I look at it and say ‘Why? Where’s this disparity coming from, and why can’t we as a culture and society dig deeper to examine that?’ We’re terrified of facing ourselves.”

Good for you, Zachary.
