There are quite a few celebrities who’ve made surprising cameos in music videos. This was back in the day, way before reality shows and YouTube stars became so popular…when sometimes getting more public exposure meant making an appearance in a popular (and even not so popular) band’s music video. Let’s take a look and see some celebrities in music videos before they became A-list famous:

1. Katie Holmes in The Flys’ “I Got You Where I Want You

Before she was Mrs. Tom “I’ll Jump On Oprah‘s Sofa For You” Cruise and Suri‘s mom, Katie was a tank-top wearing, bare-dirty-feet-frolicking Joey Potter-era muse in this 1998 video:

2. Nicole Kidman in Pat Wilson’s “Bop Girl”

Back before “Days of Thunder”, another of Tom Cruise‘s loves, Nicole Kidman, was a baby-faced chain-smoking teenager with telephone wire curls in the catchy 80′s tune of this Australian one-hit wonder:

3. Natalie Portman in Davendra Banhart’s “Carmensita”

In this case, Natalie was already an A-lister after having starred in all three “Star Wars” prequel films, and was lending her star power to the campy Indian music video for her erstwhile pubic-hair baring Hindi boyfriend. Love the Princess Jasmine outfit, Natalie:

4. Winona Ryder in Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s “Talk About The Blues”

“Black Swan’s” Winona, pre-shoplifting arrest and eventual obscurity, played a convincingly wild head-banging Jo Calderone look-alike for this low budget video made by the underground music New York group in 1998. Surprisingly, acting as back-up are then unknowns Giovanni Ribisi and John C. Reilly. These three really ought to start their own band for real:

5. Christina Hendricks in Everclear’s “One Hit Wonder”

A thinner, but no less chesty Christina Hendricks and her cute red bob looked the part of the grunge girl in this 1998 music video. Who’s to have said she and her fat puppies would turn out to be the most popular draw for “Mad Men” a decade later?

6. Gwyneth Paltrow in Melissa Etheridge’s “I Want To Come Over”

GOOPy Gwyneth, before she married into rock royalty (Chris Martin of Coldplay) for real and before she jumpstarted her music career with “Cruisin’”, played an angst-ridden, kohl-eyed rocker girl in this 1996 video when she used to date Brad Pitt. A couple of years later, Melissa Etheridge got Brad‘s then wife Jennifer Aniston for her “I Want To Be In Love” video. Creepy coincidence?

7. Angelina Jolie in Meat Loaf’s “Rock & Roll Dreams Come Through”

This isn’t the only music video Angie‘s starred in during the early 90′s. She also featured in the Rolling Stones’ “Anybody Seen My Baby” and Lenny Kravitz’s “Stand By My Woman”. Doesn’t she deserve an MTV Video Vanguard VMA award as most-hired-for-music-videos celebrity?

8. Robert Downey Jr. in Elton John’s “I Want Love”

As the only male in our celebrity videos compilation, the “Iron Man 2″ star prominently lip synched Sir Elton John‘s ballad during the period he was recovering his career and life from years’ long trouble with alcohol, drugs and the law.
