On Sunday, KANYE WEST asked his Twitter followers this question:
“Is the word B*TCH acceptable?”
The often-controversial rapper recently earned flak from critics for his use of the word “b*tch” in his new song “Perfect B*tch”—a song he dedicated to his girlfriend, Kim Kardashian—due to its offensive and demeaning nature. And though Kim was “honored” and not at all offended by Kanye’s use of the word “b*tch” to reference her, a lot of people still consider the song (and its title) to be incredibly disrespectful and sexist—even if he meant it as a “compliment” to his girlfriend.
Due to the controversy, Kanye went on a marathon Twitter session to discuss the word “b*tch” with his 8.4 million followers. He tweeted:
“I usually never tweet questions but I struggle with this so here goes… Is the word [B*TCH] acceptable?”
He continued:
“To be more specific, is it acceptable for a man to call a woman a [b*tch] even if it’s endearing?”
The rapper then answered his own question:
“Even typing it in question form it’s (sic) still feels harsh?”
Kanye then wrote:
“Has hip hop conditioned us to accept this word? Do we love this word as much as we love the word [N*GGA] in an endearing way? correction, Here’s the age old question, would we refer to our mothers as [b*tches]? Would’ we call our fathers [n*ggers] or better yet [N*GGAS]?
He added:
“If [n*gga] is such a positive word, why do we feel so uncomfortable for white people to say it, even with a hall pass?”
After a few more tweets about the words “b*tch” and “n*gga,” Kanye then wrote:
“What if there was no profanity… What if we decided to legalise profanity in a sense? In France they play songs with cursing on the radio”
And finally, after all that rambling, Kanye explained why he felt the need to discuss this issue:
“I was recently questioned about the use of the word [B*TCH] in my music and initially was offended by anyone questioning anything in my music… I will admit that I sometimes go back an omit cursing from my records. I like to use profanity as a tool and not a crutch.”
He added:
“I’m not tweeting to say what we need and what we don’t… I just wanted to think out loud with you guys today…”
What can you say about Kanye’s Twitter soliloquy?
