Wesley Snipes is finally in federal custody to begin serving his 3-year prison sentence for tax evasion.  The 48-year-old actor and film producer was convicted two years ago for tax evasion.

Prison officials tell TMZ, “Wesley Snipes has self surrendered to the minimum security Federal Prison Camp at the Federal Correctional Institution McKean, in Bradford, Pennsylvania.”

Prosecutors said Snipes earned $40 million since 1999 but had filed no returns and had been involved in a tax resisters group. Snipes disputed such involvement and said that the failure to file was his advisers’ fault.

Wesley Snipes is headed to jail for three years. Wesley Snipes was convicted of tax evasion and will serve three years for tax-related crimes. Back in 2008, it was discovered that he owed over $15 million in taxes.

While he was ordered to jail this summer, he decided to appeal the sentence and was officially sentenced today. His long-time pal Denzel Washington tried to sway the court and wrote in his defense:

Wesley Snipes is heading to jail. Snipes has lost an appeal of a three-year jail sentence for failing to file income tax returns between 1999 and 2001. The Blade actor looks to be heading to prison; a court has recently upheld his 2008 conviction.

Snipes, 47 who is free on bail, owed $2.7 million in back taxes which he refused to pay said prosecutors. Snipes has since apologized saying he was “unschooled in the science of law and finance”.

Wesley Snipes was sentenced Thursday to three years in prison for tax evasion. The maximum requested by federal prosecutors.  Snipes’ attorneys, who had argued he should get probation or house arrest. said they will appeal the sentence. The actor, who showed little reaction, gave a loud “wow” to the crowd as he exited the courtroom.
